Rettai Vaal kuruvi(1987) - A light hearted movie from Balumahendra for fun lovers

Rettai Vaal kuruvi

I knew the legendary director balumahendra for his Moonraam pirai, sathileelavathi, veedu & moodupani. All of them are serious & highly emotional. I never knew he was behind rettai vaal kuruvi which was a comedy movie.strangely I've heard that famous song raja raja sozhan naan. but it look more years to watch this movie

What is this movie about::

Story telling might be spoiler. But I would still choose to give a glance. It is about the man ending up with twin love interest.

Reflections of contemporary society, people's mindset & the upcoming technological development along with the intro of the characters in the movie:

Intro of Gopi:

Gopi's interview with students on the occasion of children day clearly shows that there were some child prodigies who looked up software engineering as a career path way ahead in 1980s.
Director slowly takes us to the characterization of Gopi as a starter that gives the glimpse of his profession & his attitude. I see this as a day in life of anchor working for a broadcasting channel. At the end of this interview with the children, There is knot & cute scene where we get to know Gopi's love for children, not to forget the Ilayaraja's compassionate BGM which also eventually serves as a theme music of the movie.

Intro of Gopi's wife:

we get to see contemporary upper level middle class family who meticulously delays the child birth for employment reasons where both husband and wife are employed. To add to the protagonist's worry his wife now gets a transfer from Chennai to Vellore leaving gopi longing for their dream child since 3 years.

Intro of Radhika:

We get to see a girl with ultra modern look who boldly answers the questions related to sex education & demonstrates her open attitude in appreciating the beauty of Gopi without being asked.

Musical excellence:

I loved Ilayaraja's theme music & 2 beautiful songs(raja raja sozhan & kannan vandhu) which were simply awesome that amplifies the mood pertinent to the situation.

I loved the realistic touch of the movie's characters that is evident thru the dialogues & direction although there were some scenes which were cinematic to have mass appeal. For instance when the movie is full of fun there is a scene where the archana and radhika goes through the motherhood & suddenly goes to a panic mood about the baby that is going to be born if baby is going to be normal or not. This doesn't happens in all the comic movies which generally tries to set the comic mood most of the times. I loved the cinematography completely. Probably I can say that this movie can be seen just for cinematography, production design & Music.

Performances:

I thought it was Vijaykanth & Sathyaraj next to Rajini & Kamal. But I was wrong, it was Mohan who was close to Kamal & Rajini in 1980s. Mohan's performance was enjoyable. Not to leave surendar who has dubbed for mohan and took the credit of Mohan's performance.

Archana was good. but I felt she performed well in all her scenes. She played a real and has approached the role naturally.

I'm not a fan of radhika. She is not a great beauty or a sexy girl to fall for.But I felt she carried her selves in a very stylish manner, Thanks to Balumahendra & the costume designer. She has given a peculiar sense of innocence to her character in spite of being a bold ultra modern girl. I felt she had a good screen presence in this movie.

Verdict:

I felt that this movie has registered & probably reiterated the message that Men are men & all they need is a chance & an excuse to fall for another girl or to have an affair with other girl. Among the mindless comic movies, this movie stays apart for its sensible comedy & righteous approach in creating the characters & depiction of the situations that they go through.
