I(film) - Visual & Stylish treat by Shankar,PC,ARR,Vikram,Santhanam & Amy!!

Poster Design & Trailer:
I remember seeing this poster where Vikram holds Amy in his shoulder giving us a glimpse of its genre(Romantic Thriller). Also as Shankar explains the one letter tamil meaning of I as Beauty. Interestingly there is one more knot in the movie starting with I that turns protagonist's life upside down. This is evident from the way I titles evolves from Red veins

Storyline:
Shankar has already revealed that this movie is a Romantic Thriller and deals with Modelling word.
This story is about raise and fall of Lower middle class Mr Madras Title winner Lingesan in modelling world and in his love life later manifests his personal vengeance against sinful baddies who had screwed him because of their greed, envy, lust and pride & nevertheless overall it is the portrayal of true love and beauty at the end.

Reflection starts.

Shankar has boldly entered into a new genre Romantic Thriller coming out of his comfort zone where he is mostly known for making Vigilante movies(Gentleman, Indian, Anniyan and Sivaji) & Romcom like Kadhalan, Jeans & Boys. Mudhalvan and Endhiran stood out till date.

Shankar's seamless story, conception and Direction:
Shankar's direction was excellent as always. May it be the initial scenes in contrasting world of Housing board where Lingesan resides and the Modelling world where Diya resides. May it be the action choreography in Gym where Lingesan earns his first enemy & the modelling footages. Shankar simply scores. He is a master in this. These are the scenes where Shankar slowly gives you the glimpse of each characters and how they get connected.
Now there needs a place and situation where both needs to fall in love and Shankar didn't break these and went ahead and connected the pairs in China where you get to see one of the all time greatest visuals in Shankar's movie till date.
Shankar wins in terms of scene direction in the second half too. His research behind the innovative punishments for all the sinners is evident and very nicely executed. Having all that said, what I was moved was the climax where director shows that true love and beauty is nothing but unconditional care of her/his beloved ones.
No wonder Shankar has probably reached his next level of scene direction and execution.
Hats Off!!

Performances:
Vikram:
Vikram has been already receiving rave reviews for his pain staking efforts that he has undergone to fit to the roles right from his Mass built body to participate in Mr Madras Competition, Slim and sleeky look as a model and the loosing lots of weight for Hunch Back. it is not just the physical transformation, but also his natural dialogue delivery of chennai dialect and semi-whispering voice in the second half. Awesome act. No wonder he deserves national award as P.C.Sreeram quoted once.

Amy:
Shankar is known for his casting of lead actors perfectly. This time shankar has came back with his perfection in casting Amy as a ultra modern good looking girl who is taking all the efforts to survive in modelling world. As of today where 90% of the actresses don't bother to learn & dub their voices in tamil, Amy from Non-Indian origin atleast attempted to do her lip movements aptly.
I always thought that leading actresses are the real actresses who is good at expressions and dialogue delivery. But I would subscribe to change that view that good looking actresses without the above mentioned traits are still the good ones as the movie demands it.

Santhanam:
I don't want to put spoliers, but I could not stop quoting one scene where we could not stop laughing. "Yaarra ivanunga, nadandhu poravankitta lift kekkuraanunga". Santhanam scores as usual. His timing and caring mate of Lingesan is a worth watching. In fact he has got an extensive screen space in climax where he reminds the sinners saying "Eppadi Irundha Naan ippadi aytten".

World Class Music and cinematography:
I was awestruck with Ladio and Pookale as it had a international feel in  its musical arrangements. Mersalaytten was already popular in Youtube. Aila being experimental for conveying the love between the pair and also a footage that is meant to endorse a brand.
I was actually waiting for female version of "ennodu Nee irundhaal to play". Without Disappointing it was played at the end in a touching moment of the movie. ARR is going to grab all the music awards for his brilliant, experimental and yet entertaining scores.
P.C.Sreeram cinematography actuall is the screen stealer in the first half as he keeps on overriding and out beating rest of the departments continuously. It was actually second half where he provides little room for others to score. :-). No offense meant. One who watches this movie would know what I actually mean. He is a master blaster in cinematography with no doubt.

As always Brilliant makeup and visual effects which again is going to win lot of accolades amidst critics and audiences.

So what is the problem?
Now wait - Amidst of the mixed reviews Am I looking like I am just showing the brighter side.

Shankar's genius in conception and direction is great as always as mentioned earlier. Inspite of this what else is that makes people tired.
Yes your are right. Cliched scenes and predictable screenplay is what people got offended. Probably. In a romantic thriller what else can anybody think about. actually People might not have got offended if this movie is directed by any other Tom, Dick or Harry, but since it is SHANKAR people expected unpredictable screenplay & first of its kind scenes. all these happen because of the expectation on shankar.

To all those who are criticizing the movie for its predictability. I have a question
Kaho Naa Pyaar Hain being in the same genre is blockbuster with lot of cliched scenes. Just like China, lead pair falls in love in a plot around ship and sea.
Can it match with I? Definitely no. Your question would be why do you compare Rakesh Roshan with Shankar?
But again if you rank all the Shankar's movies, I is unfortunately at the last rank because of only reason that Screenplay is so predictable and we don't feel for Lingesan except in the climax which is really moving and heart touching moment.

Sometimes I think probably he shouldn't have chosen this genre itself. But then it is always good to see director like Shankar breaking his comfort zone. Just like Speilberg started breaking it thru his Schlinder's list and Saving Private Ryan. that was meant to be just a analogy, not a comparison.

I recommend to watch this movie for Shankar excellence in his direction, Vikram's acting, Amy's beauty, Santhanam's comedy with world class Cinematography, music, VFX , costumes and Make up

We can excuse Shankar for the cliched screenplay and few cliched scenes. :-)
